Road Closures West of Missoula

If you are planning to ride west from Missoula to somewhere like St. Regis (like I was), you should know that an I-90 bridge project began on April 15th.  The project includes the replacement of the Alberton Gore bridge, which basically has no shoulder. (I rode it twice.  Once, it was closed to motor vehicles.)

Unfortunately, the project has resulted in the closure of the section Old U.S. 10 that leads to the recent easement granted which eliminated the need to use the Alberton Gorge I-90 bridge.  The closure starts at the Tarkio East Fishing Access Area.

I suspect what is happening is that west bound I-90 traffic will be routed onto the outside eastbound lane like it was when I last rode that way (2019).  That's something you don't want to experience on a bicycle.  (As mentioned, the westbound lanes were closed to motor vehicles in 2019 but still passable on a bike, so I had the entire Interstate to myself.). You should be okay heading east, except if you take the recently granted easement you might have to turn back and get on I-90.

You can read more about it and see maps here:
