When is the USA Summer/Winter?

G'Day, I'm planning the "Trip of a Lifetime" to find America.
 But I dont really know when your seasons start and  end which is making it hard to plan my tour times.
 I know its pretty much opposite our Down Under seasons but some more accurate info would really help. I'm starting at Niagra Falls and cycling Southwest to Baton Rouge then across East to Florida and back up the Atlantic Coast to PA (a big circle).

Winter in the northern US is typically December through mid-March but it can be cold and/or snowy from about mid-October through April. The further north you go the worse it gets and the longer the winter season.  

The extreme South and Southwest (Florida, Lousiana, the Gulf Coast, Southern New Mexico and Arizona, Southern California) basically never have a true winter but they can get rather cold (near freezing) on occasion.  

Summer in the north normally extends from June through mid-September.  The South and Southwest always have summer by northern standards.

If you are starting in upstate New York (Niagra Falls area) and want to avoid cold weather, mid-June is about the earliest you can rely on.  Baton Rouge and anywhere in Florida will be very warm and humid that time of year.  If you return to Pennsylvania by the end of August, you should be pretty much guaranteed warm weather for your entire trip.

I have no idea what to expect. People always say Americans are like this and like that, but nearly none of them have been there. So I decided to find out for myself.
And i love Cajun food and Music. Time for the real thing.

Yeah, upper NY State is going to remain pretty frigid even when it's like 80/90degF in Arizona (SW USA) or even in Florida (SE USA).  

Nothing else to really add that DaveB hasn't already done so, if you plan on going over Niagara Falls, don't forget to pack the barrel.

I've never enjoyed the hot, humid summer weather in the South.  With that in mind, and no time limit, another option would be to leave New York in the Fall, maybe around September, maybe a little later if you want to see the fall colors.  Then, migrate south like the birds and enjoy a mild winter along the Gulf Coast before heading back north in late spring.  It might work.

skymax, as an american army officer i have been out and about a bit across the globe and i always encounter people who say this or that about "those" people, delightfully it has usually been not the case.
have fun in the us, as i'm currently in germany i envy your trip...ah...mexican food.
