Trailer vs Panniers

I have one medium long trip with panniers but have not used a trailer.  With similar weight and bulk (50+ lbs/full camping gear), which do you prefer and why?  How does bike handling differ and which is easier on long steep hills?

Well, we had our full camping gear and used trailers.  Don't have experience with paniers carrying 50 pounds.  One thing for certain, no matter which way you carry it, 50 pounds is still a drag when pedaling uphill.
