Has anybody ever tried a handheld air horn to repel a bike chasing
dog?

I give'em a squirt of what ever is in the water bottle at the time. I have had BAD luck with the pepper spray.

That sounds like a good idea . We're riding a recumbent tandem trike
and being so low to the road we are afraid we'll spray each other
instead of Fido.
Thanks, James Winner

I ride an EZ Racer and Judy has a Catrike.  Yes you are really low to the ground.  We had a wedge tandem before we got bent. What brand of T-T.

Another note on pepper spray.  The neighbors goats kept grazing in our yard which I didn't mind because I think they are cute and friendly.  But when they ate all the flowers off of the hibiscus trees they crossed the line for Judy.  You couldn't shoo them fella's away. Reluctantly I tried some pepper spray on the leader of the pack at truely point blank range, inches away,I felt terrible as I did it. He responded like it was seasoning for the Marigolds and just kept munching. away.

I do think the air horn has a lot of merit.  It certainly does not require much aim.

Hi. Our trike is a  Greenspeed GTT. We're going to ride the Trans
Am(Astoria-Yorktown) this May towing a Burley Nomad. We were riding
a upright tandem until we we got wise

If you see a tough-looking dog up ahead getting ready to give you the "treatment" and you have no anti-dog devices try heading straight for it while yelling a war-cry as loud as you can and waving one arm over your head as if brandishing a weapon. Wave your bike pump if its within reach as dogs respect humans with "sticks".
This works for me quite often as it is the last thing the dog expects and usually startles it long enough to let you get past.
You got nothing to lose if you take the initiative.
