Health + Accident Insurance
« on: February 19, 2005, 09:09:50 pm »
I need to purchase Medical Insurance for my upcoming stay and Bicycle travel in the USA. Can anyone help me with links to Companies that provide that?
My local (Australian) travel insurance company will only provide 6 Months travel cover and I hope to be in the US longer than that.
I am a US Citizen so I qualify for ordinary citizens annual insurance. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Clear skies, Max.

e-mail, Paul Howarth [mailto:PHowarth@specialtyrisk.com
and ask him about "short term immigrant insurance"
I am returning to the US after 6 years and find I can't get insurance until I have settled somewhere.  This is a solution for me, and it may be what you need as well.

From my old train touring and back packing days around western Europe, I remember people discussing their travel insurance. So, companies do sell specific insurance for travelers, I assume which can be used in foreign countries.  I do not remember any specifics that might be useful.

https://travelguard.com is pretty good for travel insurance, and I've used their coverage.  It is relatively inexpensive.

They do have annual plans that are a pretty good deal, on the order of $150 per year.  But those aren't offered in all states.  Mainly what you are getting is modest insurance for basic emergency health care (up to $100,000) and emergency evacuation back home (up to $1,000,000).  So if you had a regular health insurance setup you'd use this for medical emergencies on the road and otherwise would be evacuated back home where your regular health care would handle things.

My experience has been that most US health insurance is horrible about paying for emergencies outside your home state where you purchased coverage.

Also available at low cost in some locations are services like Life Flight that pay for helicopter transport.  Again not very expensive.  https://lifeflight.org .

For medical insurance during your stay and bicycle travel in the USA, you might want to explore options with aarp life insurance customer service. They may be able to provide guidance or connect you with suitable insurance plans tailored to your needs as a US citizen. Additionally, considering your extended stay in the US, they could offer insights into longer-term insurance solutions. It's worth reaching out to them for assistance and recommendations
