Southern route weather

I'm planning on doing the southern tier route (San Diego to Florida) in 2006 and want to begin as early in the year as possible -- I would go Jan 1 if possible.  

Any thoughts out there on how soon is too soon?  I'm okay with occasional rain, but is touring the south in January or February going to be miserable?  How long would you wait to go?

Speaking about the section of the route from San Diego to Phoenix/ Tempe during January & February. I would have to say that in the San Diego area your biggest threat is rain, and for the past several years (not including this current rainy season) the rains have been light and sparse. As you head through the mountains east of San Diego you will find that it will be much cooler, and subject to more rain and snow (however past few years, not counting this one, have been have been rather dry). Down through to Phoenix it tends to be cool and dry with occasional rains (again this year was exceptionally wet).
