Hopping Freight Trains with a bike
« on: April 21, 2005, 03:48:31 pm »
There have been a few insatnces where I have been in the middle of nowhere where I have broken down and needed a ride...But there has been a train yard nearby..
1.Trains pull out of the ends of yards and its is a good idea to stay out of the middle of a yard.
2.Most small towns in the midwest have grain silos where trains stop. Ask the grain silo operater when the next train is.
3. When the train comes explain to the conducter that you need a ride to the next major town...Most conducters will put you on a boxcar or let you ride on the engine.
4.Trains operate on air brakes if you hear a hiss and click click the train is ready to leave.
5.Never cross a train with a lot of gear..go around a train if possible...

Hopping trains in Winnipeg , Manitoba ?
The comprehensive list shows Weston and Symington yards in Winnipeg but keep in mind that both yards have RESTRICTED ACCESS and are patrolled by security guards from both the CPR and VIA RAIL .
They don't take kindly to what they consider trespassing on their private property .
