Local So Cal Touring Club?
« on: May 08, 2005, 03:39:32 pm »
I am interested in finding/forming a sort of a local Southern California chapter of Adv-Cycling.  I would like to do some riding that is between the Sat morning club ride and the 1 week plus mega tour.  I would like to do an occasional overnighter to San Diego, for example, or 3-5 day tours down the California Coast.  Of course, I could just go do them, but I would prefer to ride with other people.  The group I ride with on Sat mornings has not interest/time to do that kind of riding.  Does anyone know of a club like that in So Cal?

I don't know of any club currently doing the rides that you are looking for, but I think you will find quite a few people who would go.  There are a couple of brevet clubs that do weekend rides, but they may not be quite what you are looking for.  The are currently brevets out of San Diego and San Louis Obispo.

I believe both the Orange County Wheelmen (OCW) and the Los Angeles Wheelmen (LAW) have done similar rides in the past and would be open to doing them again.  There is also an informal group called the All Day Ordeal (ADO) who regularly do long rides on Satuday or Sunday.  Another group to look into is the San Diego Longriders.  A lot of the Planet Ultra riders would probably interested, also.  What clubs do you ride with now?

Check out the AIDS/LifeCycle group.  They have training ride
groups throughout LA and at least one of them might have a
ride you'd be interested in.  Shifting Gears does a yearly
Santa Barbara ride -- from Santa Monica to Santa Barbara
and back (2 days, 195 miles), supported.

They gear their rides towards training for both ALC and the
Santa Barbara ride.
