Establish website or not?
« on: August 22, 2005, 09:32:02 pm »
My husband and I plan on doing the southern tier (w to e) starting in October. I plan on taking lots of photos and writing a journal (have figured out all that technology). But since we'll be gone for a few months I'd like to keep in touch with friends/family--more than the occasional phonecall or e-mail.
Is it worth setting up a website to keep folks posted of progress with photos? I have a cell phone, palm pilot with folding keyboard and a very small digital camera. I suppose there will be internet cafes available every week or so. What's been your experience and how do I go about this?
Thanks,
Pam

I too, with another male friend, will attempt the w to e Southern tier, starting in October.

We also do photos and electronic notes.  Rather than fussing with maintaining a website or keeping an on-line diary, I have always just kept my notes and photos with me and done periodic email updates to the friends at home.  Once home I upload my things and then work on them until I am happy with them.  In the last six years I have done eight trips in this way, most of them 2-3 months.

This said, however, I am continually looking at the possibility of keeping my things on-line as I go.  The crazyguys site looks great, but half of my trips are trekking and climbing rather than biking so that would let me out there.  The other problem I have is that the resolution that I like in my digital photos results in 1.5 to 2 megs per photo, which I think is too large to upload to these sorts of services.

We might see you on the road.

Now you have me thinking about just doing the electronic notes and photos. I really wasn't thinking of the website for storage, just so that friends and family could occasionally "check in." But maybe I'm better off sending e-mails (w/ or w/o pix) as the occasions arise.

I did read crazyguyonabike 's book. It did look like he had an awful lot of electronics with him. What do you carry? And when are you planning on leaving San Diego?
