I have been curious about energy gels and whether or not they are helpful.  I notice the directions say to have one about every 35-45 minutes of exercise.  That means carrying a lot of them on a tour.  It seems to me eating sensible food along the way and drinking Gatorade is probably the better idea.  What say you?

Energy gels are great for races and fast hard rides lasting only a few hours.  The gel directions assume that you are riding hard and getting all your nutrition from gels and drinks.

I think you're on the right track for touring nutrition.  However, carrying a gel pack or two for emergency situations is not a bad idea, such as when you've forgotten to eat all day on the bike but still want to finish climbing that pass.

All gels are not the same, so make sure you know what kind you are getting.  Clif Shots are almost pure sugar and will give you a very quick burst of energy, accompanied by a just as dramatic crash 30 minutes later if you do not take another.  Hammer Gel and Power Gel do not act quite as fast, but they do not have a sudden crash either.

Carrying gels for emergency use is a good idea- such as when the sun is setting, you've got 5 more miles to go to your planned sleeping area, and your body is saying "enough!".  I've also used chocolate covered espresso beans.  Ok, maybe they don't fit the best definition of "nutritional" but I like the little bit of energy plus caffiene (sp?) to get me those last few miles without making a meal or snack stop late in the afternoon.
Good luck!

Candy and granola bars are cheaper, taste much better, are less messy and do just as much good as "energy gels". As emergency rations they do just fine.

On a tour you are free to stop and eat whenever you wish since no one is timing you and getting to your destination first isn't an issue as it is with racers.  Save your money and eat food you enjoy.
