MTB vs Touring
« on: October 13, 2005, 12:03:41 pm »
I have been riding a Cannondale F400 MTB with a head shock for about 7 years now.  My longest trip was 7 days and about 5-7 hours riding a day.  I am planning to do some extended touring and was wondering if other people recommend a MTB.  It is very comfortable to me, however I have never owned a touring.  I would love some feedback from experienced riders.

First, you see all types of bikes used for touring.  While touring bikes are probably the most common, there certainly are many other types used.

Nothing wrong with using at mountain bike for touring.  Just change the tires to a road tire.  Certainly cheaper than buying another bike. It depends on how you comfortable you feel with a mountain bike and your budget.

If you are comfy on the MTB, that is the key. I tour on a '95 marin Team hardtail with front and rear racks with no other modifications other than skiinny tires.  I also commute to work with it.  What is beneficial for MTB touring is that you already have low gears (most likely anyway), you have wide clearence for any tires, and since it's made to ride off-road, can handle the abuse of urban and rural environments and dirt trails.

I say go for it and it's certainly a lot cheaper than buying another bike specifically for touring.
