TRAVEL INSURANCE

Myself and my girlfriend (2 Brits) are undertaking the Northern Tier route in June 2006 (Starting in Anacortes and finishing in Boston). This is a self supported & self organised challenge for charity. Can anyone point us in the direction of a travel insurance company who can offer us insurance.

Many thanks Andy & Tess (UK)

Travel insurance normally covers the cost of transportation tickets and hotel/resort deposits made prior to the trip and non-refundable.  You should be able to get insurance to cover your airline tickets but the rest of your trip is probably not insurable since you won't lose any additional money if you don't go.  I don't think you can insure against disappointment. :(

Your airline can probably recommend travel insurance carriers.

This a great topic USA... I booked a trip in Europe a few  years ago, and got insurance (which I didn't use). Now I have booked a 3 month trip coast to coast in the US. I'm 65 years old, and have some reservation about my health. I'm wondering if I should get a policy also.

I'm not quite sure what all you want to cover, but here's a company we use when we travel.  http://www.travelguard.com/  Click on "Why Buy" to see
if this meets your needs.  If you google "travel insurance" you'll find lots more.

In the reverse direction (USA --> Europe), I bought insurance once from a company called Travel Assistance International.  I felt it would be a good precaution to have medical coverage and emergency evacuation service in case I suffered a major injury in a remote location.  The policy only lasted three weeks and provided "peace of mind".  I don't really remember the cost, but I'm guessing it was in the $100-$200 range.  I never made a claim and cannot rate the company.

It's an excellent idea to buy medical insurance coverage for your visit to the USA, since we don't have any "default" (that is, nationalized) coverage.  You will not be denied medical attention in case of a major injury, but you are likely to be billed for whatever service you receive (even if they don't chase you down looking for payment).  If you go to a doctor for anything minor (a bad cold, for example), they may require payment up front.

If you are interested in personal injury insurance you can probably find that with your auto insurance. I think your agent calls it PIP.
