Has anyone out there tried the MSR Vello tent they showed in AC last month?

I have a Velo tent. I take it only when I am sharing sleeping space with someone else, it's too heavy to take for one person. The actual tent is a typical two person tent. I LOVE the huge vestibule for storage and extra space foul weather. We are taking it on a six week tour this summer.

I do not own one but borrowed one from our Cascade Designs (edit: the company that owns MSR) rep at the shop where I work. I agree with the previous poster and would never take it for a solo trip due to the weight -- and I do not consider myself overly concerned with ultra-light gear. However, if you can split the load betwen two people, it's a great tent. Very spacious, a great vestibule and the quality is reasonable -- as good as what I'd expect from MSR.

It is reviewed in Mar 2006's ACA magazine which I am reading now. It does appear to be very heavy.

ACA magazine also says that the tent space itself is fairly small for 2 persons. I've never seen one in person yet though.

I think what would be lighter is simply a single walled tarp tent, like a Henry Shires and then a simply tarp to cover the bike if you thought that was necessary.

This tent is on my radar screen too, although I have not seen it in
person.

I'm guessing that it would have been darn near perfect for that
supported 30th anniversary ride that AC had this past summer.

It would work well for RAGBRAI or one of those other cross-state rides
where a baggage truck takes your stuff from town to town.
