train travel with BOB the trailer
« on: September 17, 2006, 12:20:13 am »
I am planning a ride down the Washington coast to Oregon this spring.  I have decided to take a train to my start point.  It seems like I can take my bicycle on the train with me but looks like I will have to check BOB in. I am wondering what precaution I should take in transporting BOB.

Badger-If your BoB is an older one wherein the tongue will swivel 360 degrees then a decent box will do. Zip tie the tongue into the cargo portion of the BoB, remove wheel and also zip tie plus you can then put in some extra equipment if needed. Be advised that both your bike and box will have to be uploaded, and off loaded at train stations that have "baggage service" and not all AMTRAK stops have said service. If your BoB is newer, then youu will have to remove the tongue bolt, turn the tongue around, reinsert the tongue bolt etc.  Enjoy the Voyage....Mark of the Dalton Boys

I've done the Amtrak from Northern Califonia to San Diego with my bike
and BOB. I don't box BOB, just take off the wheel and turn the fork and zip
tie it all together.

It has never failed (I've done this multiple times) to arrive.

Have you looked at the Cello from wandertec? If you will travel in the future with bike and Bob, the investment may by worthwhile. I used it this year to transport my equipment with me via air across country, Parcel Post the Cello to my tour end point, and ship all back home via FedEx. Wandertec is very customer-friendly. Good riding.

I use a Rubbermaid 18 gal container in the BOB for all my stuff, so I
wouldn't like a Cello. The idea is interesting.
