I just finished my first long bicycling trip - cycle oregon 2006. What a blast!!!! I pedaled 400 miles over 7 days (day 5 was an optional 90 mile loop - I did laundry instead). I highly recommend it. I met people from around the world and I surprised myself by being able to complete the ride. Next year's Cycle Oregon is their 20th anniversary and they are hinting of a great route. I'm in for next year.
