This last summer I rode the Trans-Am West to East with two friends and now I'm trying to plan a solo trip to New Zealand in March of '07. I was just wondering if anyone could lend some general knowledge about there trips to New Zealand. I plan on spending 3 months wwoofing and touring. Thanks. :)

Several years ago I spent 3 months bicyling through Newzealand. I flew into Auckland and worked my way to the south Island eventually leaving from there. This ride will be easy if youve done the transam.I purchased a south/north island bicycling guide when I got to auckland which is great for distance, towns, hills, stores, etc. There are climate changes north vs. south island. You will love every mile of Newzealand and above all take your time, get off the bike and meet the Kiwis. They are great people.

Great local bike route info books: "Pedalers Paradise"  Don't bother with Lonely Planet's bike guide.

March is getting to be on the later side, if you are planning to ride on the south island, you might want to start there, then work your way north as it gets colder.

The campgrounds ("holiday parks" )there are great - most have kitchens with burners and toasters.  You can easily blow off bringing a stove, but you won't always find pots & pans.  There are tons of hostels, too.

The roads there clean and steep, and generally have very little shoulder.  The South Island has little traffic, the North more.  Don't miss the east cape of the N.I.

As everyone says, Kiwis are incredibly friendly.

Have fun!!!

...what HONDO & valygrl said AND take the ferry from one island to the other whether N to S or vice versa. Make sure to try a white bait fish sandwich, and say your for anyone who plays Auckland in rugby and someone will "shout you" (buy you a round). My view:favorite of the 2 islands...the South Island Favorite place on the s. island: Wanaka....darn, now I've got to go back down there....Regards....Mark of the Dalton Boys
