Well, this summer I'll be doing  my second pan-America trip.  I went a few years back and was in decent shape for the ride.  This year, however, not so much.  I'll be leaving around June 20th, which gives me plenty of time to train, but the problem lies in that my bike is back in New Jersey and I am at school in Ohio.  I won't make it home until June 10th.  What are some ideas on how I could train for this?  Right now, my only real plan is to sit on an exercise bike in the Rec Center often.  Any new ideas would be great.

Thanks

Matt

Well Matt if your knees and ankles are up for it try doing some running to break up the boredom of the stationary bike in the Rec . With a balanced weight training program any aerobic exercise program would work. Check the aerobic books by Dr. Cooper .

I did not spend much time in Ohio when I was there a few years ago.  Stayed in Cincinnati and saw the Reds and went up to Dayton to see the Air Force museum.  Great museum, should have spend two or three days there.  But...I am fairly certain they have bicycles in Ohio.  Buy one, borrow one, steal one.  It does not have to be much of a bike.  Then when you leave in June, sell it or just give it to someone.  A single speed coaster brake bike will work fine for training, conditioning.  A cheap Wal-Mart bike will work fine too.

Russel has a good point I went on a great tour put on by Columbus Outdoor Pursuits called XOBA ,Cross Ohio Bike Adventure and I saw an awful lot of bicycles while I was on the ride. I grew up there and bought my first bike there so I know first hand they have them . But , more to the point find out when garbage collection day is and check out what is put out by the road and you will probably find a working bike or more then one nonworking bike and build a good one out of the set. Spring is a great time to find bikes out by the curb. I have a neighbor kid who filled up his parents garage with them and most of them work and he sells them on the weekend.
Matt I drive to work across NJ twice a day every day. Where are you from if you don't mind saying. I Work in Port Reading NJ and live just north of Philly. Good luck with your trip .

Matt ,I don't know where you're going to school in Ohio but, check to see if there is a bike club . Somebody from the club might have a beater bike they would be willing to loan you. Some cyclists never get rid of their old bikes so its worth a shot . If you don't ask the answer is always no ,but if you do ask the answer might be yes .
