SFO to BHB?
« on: November 29, 2007, 05:46:59 pm »
Hi All,

I don't seem to find any flights from San Francisco to Bar Harbor.  Anyone out there know of a good way to get there?  Maybe we have to fly to Boston and then ride up to BH?  Just curious what other west coasters have done in this regard. Tnx

You may be able to fly into Portland or Bangor, ME, both of which will be closer.

I have no idea. But.

I love your tag line "Time flies like arrows,
Fruit flies like bananas"

I think I'll borrow it if you don't mind: it's my kind of humor, and I love bananas.

Ross &  Jean.

On a more serious note. I'm not into biking in San Fransico, but I can offer some advice on Bar Harbor.

Consider flying to/from Bangor. If you do, I can also recommend http://maps.google.com/maps?f=l&view=text&q=villager+motel&near=Bar+Harbor%2C+ME&btnG=Search+Businesses. It's nothing special, just typical of the lodging in Bar Harbor. The thing I like about it is that one of the owners (Helen) rode coast to coast with the ACA a few years back. As I recall, she did the Trans-Am. She also runs a shuttle service from Bar Harbor to the Banger airport. Her cell phone is 207-479-5911.

Thanks for the info guys.  Yeah, Paul that looks like a great place to start our tour from.  I may email Helen and ask if she has any idea where we could mail our bikes to there in town. We're not leaving 'til May of next year so just now in the planning stage.
...No copyright on the bananas, thanks!

I don't know of any commercial flights into Bar Harbor International Airport from anywhere.  Possibly a puddle jumper from Boston at best.

If you want to get in or out of Bar Harbor by public transportation, I would recommend the once a day bus to Bangor.  At Bangor, either take the express bus to Portland or on to Boston, and connect with air or rail there.  (Rail out of Portland only goes to Boston's North Station.  Everything else goes out of South Station.)  There are also flights in and out of Bangor, but I don't know who or where they fly to.

Actually, Bangor is a pretty decent airport. They have multiple daily flights by Northwest, Delta and US Airways.

As a result of your post, Peaks, I did a Google search and found that Helen's shuttle service (which I mentioned in an earlier post) has morphed into the "once a day bus to Bangor". I see her phone number and Village Motel headquarters have not changed, but her bus/limo now has more graphics.

Also, knowing Helen, I would expect that she is making more than one round trip per day during the tourist season.

Well I emailed Helen about the shuttle and also asked if she knew of a place in town where we could mail our bikes.  That was a couple of days ago but no reply yet, I'm hoping to hear from her.

You might want to talk to sailariel, a user here since he is from belfast, ME, which is about an hour's drive south of Bar Harbor along the coast.  He should know a bunch of info on logistics and perhaps the Bangor airport.

Living on the east coast here, my joke is that a cheap way of flying to bangor is to get onto an international flight flight and then declare a hijack. All the international flights coming to America that get into trouble go to Bangor, ME... :)

Radio:

I expect Helen will say you can ship the bike to her motel. My wife shipped the empty case to her motel; I put my bike in the case and shipped it from there to home. All in all, the shipping case sat in her little lobby for four days or so.

On three other occasions in the past, I have shipped my bike to/from the motel where I am spending at least one night. They have always been very accommodating.

Still no reply from Helen to my email.  Maybe I'll just wait until time is closer and call her on the phone.  I was hoping I could go the email route.  Maybe I'll still hear from her...

Well, Radio, I called Helen.

She's not very computer savvy, and since her son is no longer 'on staff', she is not reading her e-mail.

So, she said to have my friends call her on her cell.

I also scolded her for having instructions on her web site that are not current. She thanked me, and said she would try to solve the problem. I'm guessing her son also did the web site...just a guess.

Bottom line: She does a great job at her motel and shuttle service, but is lacking knowledge of computer technology. Call her at 207-479-5911.

OK Paul,

I will print this out and call here as soon as our plans are more solid.  Jean has an aunt in NJ so we are still trying to figure our route etc.  Thanks for your help.  We'll give her place a plug in our cazyguy journal.
