Getting to Yorktown

Hi there - I'm travelling to the USA from London at the end of April. I was just wondering what the best approach is to get to the start of the TransAm route in Yorktown (going E to W)?
Is it best to take a flight to Norfolk International or Washington & take some other route to the coast. Or is there a much better way I'm not seeing...

Advice most welcome.

We went W-E and got home by car so our situation was different, but maybe some of this will still be relevent.

Norfolk International is much closer.  The Washington DC area airports would not be my first choice unless it is much easier or cheaper to get there.  You might be able to figure out a way to ride to Yorktown from the airport if that appeals to you.  Since we drove home from the area I didn't use the airport, so I don't have specific info on that.

After doing the trip we felt a bit let down that Yorktown was not at the ocean, so we went back and rode from Jamestown to Sandbridge.

I don't think I included specific route information there though.

There was a thread on the Crazy Guy on a Bike forums that discussed various option for getting to the actual ocean when doing the TA.  These may be used for ideas to get from the airport if you want to ride.

Otherwise airport shuttles or one way car rentals may be an option.  If no one else pipes up here search or ask on the Crazy guy forums.

I started in Yorktown in 2006. I couldn't find any one way rentals or a shuttle so I took a cab from the airport. It cost $80! I hope you can find a cheaper way to do this. I had planned to stay at the Grace Episcopal Church in Yorktown but upon calling them I found that they were providing housing for Hurricane Katrina victims. So I had to reserve a motel room for $100 a night. The beginning cost me alot more than expected but I was where I wanted to be and it was pretty simple.

If you can't get a shuttle to Yorktown or nearby Williamsburg You might see if you can get a one way rental car from Norfolk International Airport to Williamsburg/Newport News Airport.

Amtrak has a stn in Newport News... that's not far at all to Yorktown.. you could ride on Rt 17 all the way to Yorktown or catch a cab
