Where's your bike taking you this summer!?
« on: March 20, 2008, 03:27:05 pm »
Warm weather and clear skies are soon approaching, I've been spending my days planning and dreaming my summer trips. A few three/four day trips in the Pac Nortwest and the Pac Coast in August.

Where's everyone else going this summer?

Anything new and adventurous?

I'm an organized tour-type buy.
August: Ride Idaho #4 a loop around the Idaho Falls area and into
Wyoming.
September: Cycle Oregon #21, loop from Elgin into Hells Canyon on
the Idaho end and up to Joseph.

I burned all my accumulated leave and borrowed ahead to do the TransAmerica, so time is limited this year :(

I have several things on my short list including the Colorado Rockies, the Pacific Coast, and the Glacier area.  It looks like it will probably be Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway this year though.

I also hope to do some weekend backpacking and some weekend sailing on the Chesapeake bay (with my bike on board).

Late June early July will be a long loop around Washington state with a few days at the end to be a tourist in the Seattle area.  Late July is RAGBRAI week.  No loaded or even credit card touring.  Next year or the year after I'll do some more independent touring.

A loop in the Canadian Maritimes in June. Possibly the Green Mountain Loop this summer, and definitely the Adirondack Loop this autumn (fall foliage, minus the black flies!).

I want to take Amtrack from St. Paul to either Minot or Devil's Lake, ND, overnight on a Friday, bike ND for a day, then Amtrack back to St. Paul Sat to arrive on Sun morning.

Otherwise, I'd like to bike from Fort Snelling in the Twin Cities along the Minnesota River to Mankato on a mountain bike.

I moved to the Pacific Northwest 28 years ago and I have been putting off riding the STP (Seattle to Portland) ride every year.  This is the year, and what is best my wife is riding with me for the first time in decades.  It should be great fun, for a good cause, but probably not too romantic camping with 9,000 other riders!    http://www.cascade.org/EandR/stp/index.cfm

Im working on a route from Crater Lake to the Pacific Ocean following the Klamath River and exploring some of the Klamath Mountains.  Then if time and energy permit on down Hwy 1 to Moro Bay.  Probably start the end of the summer or early fall.

We must ride light and swift.  It is a long road ahead.

I'am planning to ride from st. paul MN. to Garrison ND for the start of Candisc. Ride CANDISC then ride back home via Warroad MN. I have my entire four week block of vacation to do this. I chickened out of riding to Warroad last year after Candisc but headed due east on Hwy 200 through Mayville ND. Then through Bemidji and Nashwauk. I took Amtrak to Minot.

May the wind at your back always smell like home.

Wife, dog and I will ride from home in the very southern Sierras, up the East Side as we call it out here, though Lone Pine, Bishop, etc.  We'll climb over Monitor and Carson Passes and zoom out across the valley to Sonoma County, the end.  Can't wait!  I've got the rest of my semester to get through and all I can do is think about getting out on the tandem. Ugh!

Cheers,

Scott

Hey guys and gals! I'm totally new here but the plan for me is to ride through the Northern Neck of Virginia which is part of the Tidewater Potomac Route and do some stealth camping and get my gear together and functional for my first bikepaking tour! I work for the state on farms in the area so I know a lot of sweet camping spots on the rivers and the Chesapeake bay so I am really excited! I'll be lookin to ya'll for advice. Thanks!

Climb till there is no trail, then keep climbing.

My summer plans are in fate's hands. I have signed up for ACA's North Star. At the moment there are 5 people registered with 8 needed to make the trip a 'go'. It's looking dim as the decision day is April 7th.

If the North Star doesn't happen I'll have to start again from scratch. Perhaps wandering around Colorado - I've been riding mostly out of state the past few years.

Kelly,

I signed up for the ACA Great Western Loop and was informed a few weeks ago that that trip also was short a few participants.  What gives?

I'd sign up for the North Star, but I went in 2006.
