WTB for Touring???

Looking to buy a MTB for touring.  I see in the Cyclist Mag pictures of MTB's used for this purpose, but never see the brands mentioned. Not comfortable riding a road bike, so I'm hoping to find a MTB in the $1000 range that will work.  Any suggestions?

Ed might read the recent Adventure Cycling magazine, one person chose the Giant Cypress ($440) which has front suspension and 700c x 40 tires...  Not exactly a mountain bike but.....
Also check our your local Performance Bike shop, they might have a nice Fuji that fits the bill and you can usually get 10% off their prices or their website will have the reduced price that the store will match.  Plus 10% back from performance member card.
