W. Montana routes?
« on: December 27, 2003, 12:05:44 am »

I'm planning a cycle touring trip to western Montana next summer, and I'm looking for route advice.

The trip is four cycling days long, and we have to fly in & out of MT.
We live down in the scrubby chaparral area of S. Calif. and are looking for some of that Alpiny exposure.  We'd be camping out for the three nights.

This seems like a popular cycling destination, and I wonder if any list members have any good ideas about this.

If you have just 4 days, and you want alpine scenery, you may want to give Glacier National Park a try. From Apgar you can bike up over Going to the Sun Road and down to St. Mary in a day. Day 2 you can bike north to Many Glacier or beyond toward the Canadian border and back. Day 3 you could ride south toward East Glacier or Two Medicine area, and on day 4 you could return to Apgar via Highway 2. This won't leave you much time to explore the trails, but its a beautiful ride.

Hi Mark,

I talk to a fair number of folks who are planning a trip to come
to Montana to bike. The first thing that I always suggest is the
Glacier National Park area.  And since you have 4 days to
do, this would probably be the best option for you. It works
out well in that you can do a loop in that time period, and see
some of the most scenic bikeways in the country.
