Touring the Escalante region
« on: April 07, 2004, 01:52:39 pm »
Hi,

My girlfriend and I will be in the Escalante, UT region at the end of May and would like to do a 2-4 day jaunt on touring bikes while there (our mountain bikes are staying home). Are there any recommended routes in this general vicinity?  How is the road between Escalante and Boulder?  Is it wide enough or little-travelled enough to survive?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I rode this section at the same time last spring fully loaded with a friend.  That stretch of road is incredible.  Leaving Escalante there is a long downhill run into the the Calf Creek area.  Supposedly an awesome dayhike to some 110+ foot water falls there but didn't have time for those.  After that little drainage it is a steady climb (2 miles?) up the Hogs Back.  Then a long ride along a wide open ridge top that looks out over the wide open high desert.  Before dropping into Boulder.  Like I said before this road has some spectacular scenery.  The shoulder is a little small at times but the traffic is not to heavy and very courteous.  All tourists that aren't in a hurry to get anywhere.  Do be aware for the folks renting rv's for the first time.  I would try to spend a day at Calf Creek and do that day hike into Calf Creek Falls.  Enjoy!
