Crossing the Sierras

I am looking for first-hand information on the Mormon Emigrant trail,
West side of the SIerras. I would like to cross the Sierras during the last
week of APril. It's not clear when that road opens, or what other route
would be recommended.

Mormon-Emigrant Road is not plowed - so I'm guessing June this year
because of our heavy snowfall. There are reasonable alternatives
involving back roads in the lower foothills and Highway 88 higher up.

Staying south of Sacramento makes sense for the Valley/Delta section
as well ... Let me know if you'd like route suggestions.
