Lewis & Clark question
« on: January 12, 2005, 12:17:31 pm »
I plan to ride the Lewis and Clark route starting in April. The web site is not clear as to how far I will be riding. I want to ride as much as possible on paved roads. How far will I have to ride to complete the route if I stick to paved roads as much as possible? How much unavoidable unpaved roads will I encounter? Thanks.

The ACA maps will tell you where the route goes off hard pavement.  However, from what I understand, I think the most of the Lewis& Clark route is on hard pavement.

At least with the Northern Tier, there were a couple of places where the route goes onto dirt roads.  These were fine.  Probably the hardest off pavement section was the 90 miles along the Erie Canal.  But there was a road alternate that paralleled it.  Anyway, the only problem with the canal tow path would be if you had 25 mm wide tires.
