TransAmerica to Charlotte

My wife and I plan to ride from central Kansas to Charlotte, NC, primarily on the TransAmerica Route. I've looked a fair bit at NC maps, but haven't settled on the best route south after leaving the TransAmerica trail.  One option I'm looking into is riding the Virginia Creeper Trail to the border and then taking county roads through the mountains.  Is this feasible?  What better  options am I missing?

depending on where you come into NC at you could easily get on the blue ridge parkway ride south towards Brevard which would take you through asheville and from there head east toward charlotte.

I was hoping to ride the Blueridge Parkway some, but it really doesn't get us any closer to Charlotte.
