KATY TRAIL

I want to pass along some new info for future Katy Trail riders.  The county of St. Charles, Mo. has opened a new county park, KLONDIKE PARK, and it is right on (next to) the Katy Trail.  The park offers camping and shelters and cabins.  It has hiking and biking trails and it connects to the Katy via the bike trail.  Actually, the Katy goes right along the side of the parking lot at the new river access for boaters at the new park boat ramp.  It is located between Matson and Augusta trail heads, somewhere around the 61 or 62 mile post marker.  Hope all the trail users can put it to good use - it seems there are hardly any camping areas along the trail so this one should help fill that gap.

Thanks for the info.  I am thinking about riding the Katy trail this summer, was wondering what the surface is like?  Could you do it with a road bike (I have 700 x 38 tires on it) or would you need a mountain bike?

I rode it with 700x35's,no problem

And I did most of it on 700x32s, which was fine (even after a rain, it was still OK, but not great). I wouldn't go much skinnier than that with a loaded bike, though.

The KATY, when dry, is very, very hard pack pug and will work well for road bikes in general. The main thing though is not to be on the trail when its raining, or when really wet as it turns into this clay like slurry that is beyond manageable. Stay at or above 700 X 32's and you'll be fine....its a great trail. Mark of the Dalton Boys
