SOUTHERN TIER: SEPTEMBER

I am planning to ride out from the East Coast of Florida (prob. Melbourne area) and cross the US to Cali (prob. San Diego).  I would really appreciate any advice b/c I've never attempted anything close to something like this.  For example: Is September a good time to take this trip?  Also...if you are fun and looking for an adventure- I would like to leave in early September so why don't you join me?
