Southern Tier recommendations for winter
« on: August 19, 2005, 07:55:04 pm »
I am planning to do a 5-6 day tour, west to east, on the Southern Tier over semester break in Jan. 2006, but am unfamiliar with the route. I live in the Denver area and the less travel, the better. Any suggestions taking into consideration a scenic route (forget Texas) and weather for that time of year?

LOL, don't dismiss all of Texas out of hand. The hill country is quite lovely that time of year, say my friends, and big enough for a ride that long. Perhaps someone will chime in with first-hand experience.

Definitely recommend the Texas Hill Country between Austin and even out to Del Rio. I went through there in Spring 2004 and the wildflowers were astonishing as were the multiple creeks and rivers along the way. Not too much traffic on the So Tier route and really nice folks along the way.

And remember - this is/was Lance's training grounds!

Haha....I don't blame ya.  I just got back from a winter trip on the Souther Route. Didn't quite like TX all that much either, for one thing, every piece of property is fenced and posted... no camping on those properties there.

There are some bright spots, Austin, Hill Country, and taking HW238 through Big Bend National Park and onto Presidio is just beautiful.  And when you are done, you can claim that you climbed the steepest road in TX. :-)  A very less traveled route, but well worth it.  Stop by at Talingua Ghost Town too.

Aside from TX, New Mexico is nice.
