Northern tier questions

Anyone have experience starting the Northern Tier route around the 1st of May in Anacortes? What might we expect for weather in the northern Cascades that time of year? Would this likely get us to Glacier NP too early to be able to ride the Going to the Sun highway (usually opens June 15th??)? How to deal with the 11-4 daily closure of the Going to the Sun highway? Any help appreciated.

We started in mid June, so I don't know about weather in early May.

Yes, Going to the Sun Road will probably not be open until mid June.  It takes about 2 weeks to go from Anacordes to Glacier National Park.  (Going to the Sun Road was about day #12 for us)  So, follow the alternative though Maris Pass.  

How do you deal with the 11 to 4 restriction on parts of Going to the Sun Road?  Just get an early start.

In normal years the North Cascades highway opens around the 3rd week in April. In years of heavy snowfall, opening could be later. Your crossing weather could be anything from sunshine to snow. The highpoint is Washington Pass at 5477 feet so be prepared. It is a gorgeous road, scenery is stunning. When you get to Glacier, I'd suggest staying at the closest place you can on the West side of the summit. Get an early start so you hit the summit before the cut off. You'll want enough time to take in the views. I stopped a lot on the way up. The views are just WOW.
