My wife and I are doing a cross country tour next summer from Oregon to Mass.  We're using a combination of the Lewis and Clark route and the N. Tier going west to east.  We are thinking of trying to take ferries across the Great Lakes rather than going down and around to Buffalo NY.  Does anyone have any experience with this approach?  Any ideas?

I've never done the ferry crossing myself, but it's fairly common from the travel logs I've heard and read.  Check out Mike Munks America by Bicyle tour reports here:

Day 36 of the ABB North Crossing is the ferry across Lake Michigan.

Hope that helps

When I did my transcon, back in the '70s, I took the ferry from Manitowoc to Luddington, and it was fine. Bikes were loaded last, and unloaded first.

We followed the Great Lakes route and Lake Erie Connector last summer rather than follow the Northern Tier around.  We picked up the Great Lakes route at Osceola Wisconsin and followed it to Escabana Michigan to Mackinaw City to Luther Michigan.  We crossed into Ontario at Marine City/ Sombra and hooked up with the Northern Tier again at Fort Erie.

I enjoyed the route, but haven't done the Northern Tier between Grand Rapids and Buffalo, so I can't compare the alternate
