Hello,

i plan to do the TransAm route. How much car traffic should i expect? Is a road bike suitable for this route?

thank you!

Hi Pacho,

On a route this long you will find every kind of traffic condition. Experienced cyclists chose the roads, but they are still public highways. Each map contains a few paragraphs about general traffic conditions to expect and warns of long stretches where few or no services are available.

Is a road bike suitable? It depends on the bike. Can it safely carry the necessary panniers or attach a trailer? Test how it handles fully loaded in either configuration.

People have ridden just about every kind of bike across the US, starting with high-wheelers. Take a look at http://www.adventurecycling.org/  > Adventure Cyclist > How-To Department for some good articles about choosing a bike and many other frequently asked questions about long-distance touring.
