A friend forwarded your meaasge to me. I have ridden from Oakland to Las Vegas twice and either in July or August. My main route were local side roads from the Bay Area into the San Joaquin Valley. I used I-5 to Lost Hills to SR 46. I took SR 46 to SR 65 to Bakersfield. From Bakersfield, I took SR 58 over the Tehachapi's to Mojave & Barstow. From Barstow, I was forced to ues an inferior Frontage Rd. along I-15. After it turned to gravel, I entered I-15 and rode through Baker, over Mountain Pass and all the way to Jean, Nevada where I had to legally get off the freeway. The decennt side road took me right into Las Vegas where either the roads were great or no good. The place is constantly under construction so there may be more good routes through town now. I am planning to leave Oakland for a six day trip to Las Vegas on August 12th. I will check out decent routes through Las Vegas if any exist.

Most (all?) of the freeway construction from Baker to Jean has been completed...unless they've started something new in the past couple of months.  I-15 is much wider now w/ decent shoulders. I used to work that part of the freeway as a Firefighter and strongly advise that you don't ride that part on Friday or Sunday...or any time around a holiday weekend.
Good luck!
