Trans Am midpoint????

I'm considering doing the Trans Am east to west in two summers. What would be a logical halfway point to conviniently pack up the bike,fly home and then return the following summer to pick up where I left off?

Pueblo, Colorado is my best suggestion.  It's close to halfway and you have a convenient airport.

I think the Trans AM route goes near St. Louis and sort of near Kansas City.  KC is roughly half way mileage wise and has a full function airport you could get a cheap plane ticket from.  St. Louis isn't quite half way but has a big airport you could get cheap fares from.  Once past Missouri, you are pretty much committed to riding to the middle of Colorado before finding another sizable airport, Denver.  There are no sizable towns between eastern Kansas/western Missouri and the middle of Colorado.

Last year I cycled from Yorktown, VI to Frisco, CO (2,400 miles), then caught a shuttle bus $50 to Denver Airport. This year I flew back to Denver, shuttle bus to Frisco then on to Florence, OR (1,800 miles).

This has the advantage of climbing up and over Hoosier Pass on your last full cycling day (highest point on Transam) whilst still fit and acclimatised to altitude.

Thanks Bill - Your trip sounds close to how I was thinking. Just three questions. What time of the year did you leave Yorktown? How many days did it take you to get to Frisco? How did you handle transporting your bike?

The following have airports on or within one day's ride.  You might need to have a box to ship home so that could be an issue at smaller airports.

Pueblo, Vail (beautiful ride on bike path to the west from Frisco), & Steamboat Springs.
