Mt. Rogers Nat'l Rec. Area, VA

I've recieved several suggestions on a route from Fairborn, OH to Sunset Beach, NC.

The most interesting takes me SOutheast through Ohio crossing at Portsmouth then Souteast through Kentucky towards Damascus, VA. From there it takes me East through the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area on route 58/603/76.

Has anyone ridden this road(58/603/76)? If so what might I expect regarding elevation and type of road (shoulder, etc).
