Newbie's First Try: Anza Borrego area?
« on: October 12, 2006, 12:58:51 pm »
Hi all:

My daughter and I are thinking we might want to try our first limited self-contained tour in February or March of 2007.  (At this point we don't even have our equipment together.)  Since Northern California is typically cold and rainy around that time of year I thought we might drive down to the Anza Borrego Desert area (east of San Diego) for a shake-out trip of a week or so.

If anybody has some local knowledge of the area and could provide pointers or recommendations I'd appreciate it.

That's so cool, going with your daughter!

The YHA (hostelling international) in San Diego runs a supported tour during the week between christmas and new years.  I did that tour a few years ago.  It's a loop out of downtown san diego, takes 6 days unloaded, so it might be too long for one week loaded (and there are some big mountains) ... but it's probably appropriate to modify for a self-supported trip, and it does go through the area you are talking about.

I don't have maps and can't remember enough to be helpful with routing, but I bet the folks at the San Diego hostel could help you out.
