Hi Mika.

It is pretty easy to modify the Northern Tier to include a ferry ride across Lake Michigan, from Manitowoc, WI to Ludington, MI. I'm not familiar with any ferries going across Lake Superior or Lake Huron, and the only boat I know of across Lake Erie is not very convenient. I would recommend the Lake Michigan Ferry.

To modify the Northern Tier to include Lake Michigan, get the following maps from Adventure Cycling:
[list=1]
  • All the Northern Tier map-set, except for sections sections 7, 8 and 9.
  • North Lakes Section 1
  • North Lakes Section 2
  • Lake Erie Connector

Assuming you are going west to east, you will depart the Northern Tier route in Minnesota and re-join it in New York. You will be going through Wisconsin, Michigan, and Ontario Canada, where the riding is quite nice.
