I've driven between KC and Dallas more than a few times. Of course I take the direct car route of 71 along the west side of Missouri, I-40 to Big Cabin OK, then 69 or something like that through Tulsa and down to the towns at the TX OK border. Denton and Sherman? Somewhere in OK 69 changes to Hwy 75.
For the route through OK, see if you can find out what routes Oklahoma Freewheel has used. A couple years ago they started at a border town to the NE of Dallas. Ended up south of Wichita on the border. You should be able to use pieces of various OK Freewheel routes to plan a good route through OK.
As for KS, it depends on where you hit the OK KS border. I would not really suggest the highway in KS that runs along the west side of KS. Parallel to 71 on the Missouri side. Its 2 lane and while less traveled than the 4 lane 71 in Missouri, I think its still heavily traveled. Highway goes through Pittsburgh KS. See if you can get ahold of some of the BAK routes. They should have some that head through Wichita and then angle north towards KC. Probably hitting the border before getting to KC but they would get you closer.
March can be really miserably cold in KC. As in temps in the 30s. Make sure you have warm clothing with you.
