Indiana touring

Several years ago, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources mapped out 6 bike routes, and published maps for them. They were called the Hoosier Bikeway System. I  believe this was the first attempt at introducing bike touring to Indiana.

I have the complete set of maps, and am in the process of making GPS routes from them. Perhaps you can order the maps from the Indiana DNR, but I don't recommend it unless you really enjoy preplanning a trip (they are really poor quality). If anyone knows that these maps (dated about 1990 or so) have been updated, let us know.

Based on some comments on another thread in this forum, I thought I should make this post. If there is interest, I can supply more details.

Hondo.

You used to be able to order the maps I am referring to from:

Indiana DNR
Division of Outdoor Recreation
Streams and Trails Section
605 State Office Building
Indianapolis, IN 46204

The system consists of about 800 miles of route, mainly in southern Indiana. As I mentioned in my earlier post, the maps are very poor quality. I don't know if they are still in print, or if they have been improved.

If you have a GPS or GPS software, you can download the complete set of routes from my web site. Click on Download Hoosier Hills File under the Bicycling section.

Have you checked the Indiana Bicycle Coalition? They have a few resources that may help.

Thanks Paul. I will either jump off the transam in Illinois and head north or start from Indy and head south.
