Indiana (South Bend area) to Chicago?
« on: January 14, 2007, 11:03:34 pm »
Does anyone have route suggestions for riding from the South Bend, IN area to Chicago?

I saw PTaylor's post about Indiana biking maps and those might do the trick if they cover the right places.

Other thoughts?

Thanks,

Bill

Get ahold of the TRIRI organizer.  He has been organizing that ride for about 25 years now.  He is based out of Bloomington.  I would guess he could tell you some of the routes TRIRI has used over the years that might get you to Chicago.

Ride:

I note that your RideForClimate already seems to have a route from South Bend to Chicago, so I presume you are looking to improve it.

I have a good route from South Bend to Dunes State Park (about half way to Chicago), but I have never ridden from there to Chicago. I will be happy to post the route if you are interested.

The Hoosier Bikeway system I originally mentioned, does not include anything in Northern Indiana.

You may find the link to NO Indiana Trails handy.

If you find a good route, let us know. As a South Bend resident, I have often thought about doing that trip.

Russell - Thanks. I see their website here and will get in touch.

Paul - The Ride for Climate website shows a route that we intend to
follow but there are big sections that we still have to map out. In some
cases, we only know where we intend to go, not exactly how we are
going to get there. Some areas I'm not concerned about because we
will be on a route where we can use ACA maps or I know there are
good state bicycle maps (e.g. WI), but there are other areas where we
still need to map out the details. If you have the South Bend to Dunes
State Park electronically, I would love to get a copy.

Thanks!

Bill

Bill.

Take a look at my web page.

Under 'Bicycling', you will find links to three downloads for 'Howe to Dunes'. If you don't have a GPS, the 'gdb' file will be of no use to you.

I took the liberty of starting your 'Michiana' route in Howe, IN because I have some experience in that area. I made it a point of avoiding cities to avoid traffic. If you want to go through South Bend for publicity purposes, I can give you directions to the College Football Hall of Fame, The University of Notre Dame, or wherever.

In South Bend, we seem to get one or two groups every year who go through on charity rides and get publicity in the local newspaper (The South Bend Tribune). I presume this area is a windfall because it shares a transportation corridor with Chicago.

You and your group have bitten off a big task Bill. Good luck.

Excellent - thank you.

I'll let you know if we decide to do a stop in S. Bend and ask you for
more details in that area.

It is a big undertaking to be sure, but there's so much at stake on this.
We are grateful for people like you and others on this forum who are
making things *much* easier.

I noticed that there is a good Chicagoland bicycle map online at http://andreischeinkman.com/bikemap/ and at http://www.cityofchicago.org/Transportation/bikemap/keymap.html
