I have planned my route so far to Nebraska - Wyoming border using mostly Route 6 and route 3 across PA,OH,Il and IA etc. Crossing into Wyoming on Highway 20. Can anyone give me information about using I25 or say I90 in Montana. What states alow such traveling by bicycle on Interstate Higway if any? Thanks.

You can bicycle on I-90 in Washington state with the exception that it is closed to bicycles thru Spokane and also closed from Issaquah to Seattle. There will be signs stating "bicycles must exit"

West of the Mississippi you can ride the shoulders of the interstates most anywhere except near major cities or very heavily traveled stretches such as Phoenix-Tuscon.  Often as not there are parallel roads - the old highways that were usurped by the interstates.
Montana is certainly no problem. The state has no major cities. I have ridden right by troopers ticketing motorists on I90 and just gotten a friendly wave.

Thx for the tip erniegrillo !!  I'm starting to get the immpression it is aceptable in the barren western states to ride the interstates, except around large urban areas that is. I guess asking the local law enforcement about it when there is also a good idea?

The Washington State DOT website has a bicycling link that gives info on roads closed to bicycling
Other states may have similar info on their websites.  http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/bike/Closed_Routes.htm
