Klamath Falls to North Rim
« on: May 09, 2007, 03:10:12 am »
I'm planning to peddle from Southern Oregon, around Klamath Falls, to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, leaving around June 22. ACA offers good route choices from Fallon, NV to the North Rim. Does anyone have a suggestion on the route from Klamath to Fallon? Is the route from Alturas, Ca to Gerlach, NV, to Wadsworth, east of Pyramid Lake, too hot, dry, desolate, forlorn, or God-forsaken to be considered. I want to avoid Reno, because of the magnetic pull of the casinos as well as to avoid the traffic. Thanks. Stan

Hi,

I've driven a semi over your proposed route a hundred times, but always traveling north I-80 to Cedarville, CA.  You'll have a long hard grade from US 395 to Cedarville.  It's 10 or 12 miles and some of it's 9%, as I recall. It's ranch country for a long ways, then it starts getting dryer, but not any drier than the North Rim.  By the time you get to Gerlock you'll be in desolate country.  There are ranches where you can get water, and a little bit of traffic.  Don't pass up a chance to refill.

Be prepared to take care of yourself.  I doubt cell phones are any good.  I'd make a cardboard sign that says water and take it along, just in case.

Don't be frightened away from a good adventure.
