I am currently compiling a log of the dog incidents that occur in KY. If you have had any dog incidents while riding in KY, could you forward me any details you may have (date, location, county, description of incident, etc...)- This is for my own data gathering purposes.

Thanks

I rode across Kentucky in 2005 on my way to Virginia from Oregon.  Armed with Halt, prepared by all the hype for major dog hassles, my report for your database is ZERO / NADDA dog incidents in Kentucky!

I rode west to east on the TransAm this year and was in Kentucky in June. I had heard from many, many cyclists about the terrible dogs in Kentucky and some people told me the owners would encourage their dogs to chase cyclists. I had a large cannister of bear spray which I never used and I figured I would have to use it on dogs in Kentucky. On June 30th, between Berea and Booneville, I was chased by 12 different dogs. I was able to just shoo all of them away except one. These are dogs which came into the road and chased and barked at my side. I was only really threatened by the one dog which grabbed the covering on my trailer and was tugging it. The rest of my ride in Kentucky, I never had another incident. There were a few dogs which started to come at me but their owners hollered at them and I was never threatened. I have to say, I was only chased two other times on my whole cross country trip. One in Oregon and the other in Virginia. My experience is dogs are the least of your worries. Cars getting too close are more apt to kill you.

I also rode W to E Transam, in 2004 and had no dog incidents in KY. However I did meet a plucky Jack Russell who kept pace with us for a mile or so in Kansas, until we felt guilty about leading it too far from home, so we rode back and knocked on a door of a neighboring farm where they agreed to look after the wee fellow until its owners returned.

I hate dogs while riding my bike. I have been bitten twice, and ran over a friendly once, causing an end-over spill.

I have only ridden in KY once, but have also ridden in surrounding states, TN, OH, IN, MO.

It seems to me that the dog problem has lessened in the past 20 years. While I used to carry dog spray, I no longer do so. I'm not sure of the reason, but I think it is because dog owners are afraid of their dogs getting hit by cars, so they keep them cooped up or on a chain.

I rode the Trans Am last year and I do remember the stretch between Berea and Boonesville.  I remember some dogs but I didn't feel threatened.

In Illinois I took the Mississippi levee alternate and was chased by a group of dogs.  They weren't threatening but the incessant barking was annoying as hell.  I'm pretty slow on my 'bent so dogs tend to chase me a long way.  They followed me for about a mile.  Rather than feel guilty though, I laugh if the owners are trying to call the dog back and it won't come.  It's one little bit of cyclists revenge I enjoy.  Tee-hee.
