Europe: Bavaria Tour
« on: July 26, 2007, 10:45:03 am »
I will be touring from Munich on a loop round Bavaria from 02.Sept.07 to 13.Sept.07 (back to munich) self supported, camping/hostelling and then from Munich to Rijeka, Croatia, via Austria, Italy and Slovenia, (14.Sept.07 to 21.Sept.07). Aiming to travel between 75-100miles per day.

Any advice, tips on nice places to stay or even interest from other riders gratfully received!

hi,

i am not very familiar with bavaria nor the other countries you are going to visit. While you are riding I ll be somewhere between Glacier NP and Yellowstone.

However, if I can be of any assistance during preparation let me know. You might consider to give Tschechia a visit  on your bavaria trip never been ther ebut heard a lot of good stuff. Otherwise I recommend the german railwaysystem www.bahn.de. Its rather good, fast and allows you to skip less interesting parts and be more mobile.  You can take your bike on any regional trains (there might be a low fee, I am not sure if that applies in bavaria but I ll find out if you are interested) called Regionalbahn RB, or Regionalexpress RE the latters ones are running express while RB stops in every village. There are Intercitys IC which require reservation to be mmade for bikes. ICEs unfortunately do not take any bikes.

Also helpful might be the german youthhostel organisation www.djh.de which have a dense network of hostels. However, nowadays many are almost hotels and thus more expensive...

I rode in southern Germany back in 1992.  Came up from Switzerland to Munich then went east to Austria and Salzburg.  Bavaria reminded me of the midwest.  Lots of farmland, rolling hills.  Go to the concentration camp north of Munich.  It is the one with the slogan "Work will make you free." or something like that written into the iron gates.  The Neuchwenstein (Disney) castle is SE of Munich.  I guess its worth seeing.  Best to spend an afternoon or day actually touring it.  I was in a hurry so just saw it from the outside.  Lots and lots of tourist buses in the town and castle.  If you get to Salzburg, it was nice.  The city was old and historic and had lots to see by just walking around.  Salt mines near there have tours that I thought was nice.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the hostel link, useful information. May use the bahn if I am not going to make it back to Munich to meet my friend.

I think I will miss the "Disney" castle as I'm heading out East and then arriving back from the North, but I will pass through Salzburg - which I'm looking forward to seeing.

Enjoy your trip to Yellowstone!
