GDMBR Update (Rawlins to Slater)
« on: July 23, 2012, 09:32:13 am »
I thought it might be a good idea to share an update with anyone that is considering the GDMBR, and in particular, the section from Rawlins to Slater.  Unseasonably high temps and a very dry winter and spring have made this section pretty difficult in regards to staying relatively cool and hydrated.  Water is not as prominent as the map shows.  Many of the streams were either dry, out of reach, or non moving and very muddy.  Due to the high temps, this can be a very dangerous stretch.  I got myself into a bit of trouble with dehydration and heat exhaustion.  When I got to Slater, I found out from locals that there was no grocery store in Savery.  This added to my challenge as I was relying on some gatorade and cold drinks to pull myself out of my conditions.  However, I was fortunate enough to get some amazing help from the owner (Debby) and assistant (Shawn) at Riverbend campground/cabin rentals.  If you are going to be riding this section any time soon, please load up on water/electrolytes every chance you get and be aware of the temperatures.  My tour ended early due to heat exhaustion but yours doesn't have to.  Best of luck.

ALSO note that there is 17 miles of construction on Sage Creek Road that you'll have to deal with.
