Has anyone been on the Alpena to Mackinac Trail or the Midland to Mackinac Trail? We will be riding from Saginaw North to Cheboygan. We are riding Bike Fridays and pulling double wheeled trailers but we could use panniers. Is the trail suitable for this type of travel or would it be better to use Highway 23? What are the conditions on Highway 23, shoulders, traffic? We will appreciate any information that you can share with us. Thanks.

Pete, You might want to take a look at the trail descriptions on Michigan Mountain Bike Association atwww.mmba.org  I hear that is a real nice trail. We hope to ride it someday, too.

My riding partner and I circled the Lower Peninsula in 2006.  I do not believe that the trails you are asking about are completed.  The route that we followed up the east side of the state avoided US 23 when possible.  US 23 has wide shoulders in the areas when we were on it, but there is a lot of traffic on weekends and it is noisy.

Here is a link to our exact route: http://www.wayfaring.com/maps/show/7829.  You can zoom in to see the route.  Our route north of Au Gres essentially followed a route used by the League of Michigan Bicyclists for their now defunct Shoreline East Tour.

A good set of Michigan regional maps is available from Universal Map Co.  We used these maps a lot.

I may have misunderstood your original question about the trail in Michigan.  But according to this articlethe trail that I had in mind is complete and ready for riding and reviews from some that have ridden it are quite positive.
