Newport Oregon to Ontario Oregon
« on: January 28, 2008, 04:52:57 pm »
Hello,

We are planning a cross-Oregon trip for the first week in April and would like to ride from Newport to Ontario.  The most direct route looks like Hwy 20 to 26.  Does anyone have experience on this route?

Thanks in advance for your help!

It's been over 10 years but I rode from Nyssa to Yachats using parts of this route. We did it in September. Oregon has a great bike map (call 503-986-3556 or e mail the ODOT) and it shows most of this route as low to moderate traffic with 4 foot shoulders. It is very scenic and I think Oregon is one of the best states to bike in. Good roads, scenery, camping and moderate traffic.  Be aware of snow in the mountains. You have a hige pass to cross across the Cascade Range. Also, carry extra water in Eastern Oregon. It can be many miles between towns.

it might be the most direct route but not necessarily the best... though
considering the highway infra=-structure in this part of state ur pretty
limited.

u can expect to share the road with log-trucks and rv buses/ trailers
escpecially from newport to corvallis.   depending when u leave u'll also
hve some heavy weekenders to the beach.  that stretch is pretty narrow
and serpentine in spots and not much shoulder.  i believe the road is
posted    bicycle use but still it's pretty nasty in a few spots.

nice ride though   u can expect some drizzle and or rain depending
when

have fun
