Bike House Not Yet Open
« on: April 12, 2008, 09:10:05 pm »
Just visited June Curry, aka The Cookie Lady, and she says the Bike House is not open and she has no idea when it WILL be open.  She's already turned away five bikers this year.

June no longer owns her residence or the bike house.  The current owner is renovating parts of the bike house, and she has no control over when or what is done.  In addition, some local bikers, who in years past had helped prepare the bike house for the season, have not shown up this year.

Soooo, don't plan on staying at the bike house anytime soon.

Yesterday I was in contact with a friend of June Curry. The Bike House will
be open, and anyone who wants to stay there needs to contact Debbie at
540-456-4547 to see if space is available. Shelter and food will be
offered to bicyclists on a limited basis. This information is also listed on
the TransAmerica Trail Section 12 online addenda (BC-1543 07) version.

Over in bikeforums.net, there is a note (Bikeforums discussion of June Curry) saying that June has had to sell her home and the bike house. Neil Gunton (of Crazy Guy on a Bike fame) is trying to organize donations to help her.

I guess the problem is that we're getting conflicting info from June and Debbie.  Here's what June wrote me on Friday 4/18:

"Still don't have the Bike House open but let people see it.  Finally got the water on properly but need shower work."

Is she receiving visitors? I don't need to stay at the house. I just want a picture of us together and to say "hi."

As of last month, she continues to receive visitors at her house.  However, she is elderly, and hard of hearing.  This means:

A) You might end up hearing the same story multiple times.
B) It's pretty much impossible to have a two-way conversation with her.  If you ask a follow-up question, she usually doesn't hear you.  When my wife and I visit, we just let her ramble, and listen to her stories (sometimes multiple time - see point A).

By all means, stop by and visit; she has some fascinating stories to tell.
