Wester Express Conditions?
« on: May 10, 2008, 07:21:45 pm »
Hi, Tourists:  Does anyone know what the road conditions are in the Sierras at this point?  My wife and I are heading out on a tour up the East Side and will cross at Monitor and Carson Passes, which I know are open, but I'm wondering about the Mormon Immigrant Trail that cuts over to Placerville.  We'll be heading west.  Is the road open?  Who might I contact for info.?  We're doing the ride regardless, but it would be nice to know beforehand.

Cheers,

Scott

Scott, Just saw your post - was'nt sure if you are on the road yet or got the answers to your questions. I was in the Sierras around Lake Tahoe about five days ago - amazingly little snow for this time of year! Carson and Monitor Pass are open.

I live not far from Placerville and might be able to provide an overnight stop. Contact me at rngrtgh@earthlink.net if you wish.

Have a great ride, Tom

Hi Scott. Called the local forest service office and was surprised to find that Mormon Emigrant Trail road is still closed.  Their phone number is 510-644-2324 for further updates. Sorry if my post was somewhat misleading, with the snow conditions that I had seen in the rest of the region I errantly was overly optimistic in what to expect for Mormon Emigrant.

Hey, Tom:  Thanks so much for your posts.  We're in the final stages of pre-launch.  Still waiting on a set of wheels for our new Cycletote trailer, but they should arrive today--with the help of a $46 expedited  shipping charge.  Ugh.  We're leaving here about 4am on Monday to deal with this first heatwave.  What timing, eh?

We appreciate the update on Mormon.  I suspect it is one of those "official" closures, but the road is actually mostly clear of snow.  We'll be hitting that road in about two weeks or so, which will make a difference.  But to be honest, if the road were mostly snow free but still "closed," we couldn't imagine better conditions--no cars! :)

We'll keep your info. in case we need a place to flop.  I don't know how our pacing will go exactly in your area.

Thanks again for the support.

Cheers,

Scott
