With the advent of this bridge for pedestrians and cyclists, it might allow the Atlantic Coastal Route to bypass the MidHudson Bridge. Not that the MH is an ugly ride or anything, the RR bridge would be a quieter way to cross the hudson and may be better connecting to points north of poughkeepsie. Right now the AC route once reaching poughkeepsie, rides through downtown to get to Rt 9W and then starts going north towards Hyde Park. I believe the RR connects two MUPs which might be a good diversion off busy roads and 9W for a bit though I'm not sure what the MUPs are in terms of paved or ballast or what.

What is the best way to cross the Hudson River in the Poughkepsie area. I plan to be there at the weekend and hope to find a crossing. Any info would be appreciated. I'm comming from NorthWest Conneticut area Rte 44 I think ( no map in front of me rite now ).

See Haviland Rd from Tillson Ave, Haviland Rd gently grades down to a small park that has the entrance to the north walkway of the FDR-Mid Hudson Bridge. You can cross the hudson there on the walkway and once you're across, you can go through downtown Poughkeepsie to get to points north or east.  The ACA's Atlantic Coastal route has cue sheets for this area, though I don't recall the exact map name, it's on the ACA's map page though anyway.

BTW, You can take Rt 44/55 from say Millerton and the Harlem valley railtrail to Amenia from NW CT... Big hill though to climb right outside Amenia.  You have options when you get to Poughkeepsie though, I've cut across to Rt 9 because we wanted to stop at Hyde Park on the way back.  Getting to the bridge is tricky, on Rt 9South, you have to make a somewhat dangerous left turn or else you wind up on a divided highway with no shoulder. It is signed for "no bikes" so make sure you pay attention as you get closer to the bridge. This left turn puts you on a side street where you can make your way to the bridge crossing's north walkway.

[edit ] I think Delafield Road is the last left turn before you can't go any further on rt 9, that will get you to the bridge and also past some bars and restaurants..

Thanks for the tips. I'll be looking to hook up with rte52 when west of Poughkepsie and then into N.E Penn. turning to rte 317 i think. I'll probably stay at Margaret Lweis Norries State Park and then try to make it to N.E Penns in one day. Have you rode that?

I've camped and kayaked from Mills Norrie in Staatsburg, NY..

From there to NE PE.... I'm guessing about 70-80 miles, should be doable, I've ridden from my house to Mills Norrie and I live in Northern NJ.. I think I am about 70 miles to New Paltz and another 10ish miles to Staatsburg from there...   Hills are moderate although you'll probably hit some decent hills closer to NW NJ, like around sullivan county as the Kittatinies run all the way from PA to the Shawangunks.
